The Middle Ages is more than just an age, for many people it is a way of life.
The medieval Shop by EMP - everything your medieval heart desires
The heart is at the centre of many literary texts from the Middle Ages - whether the heart of a "Frouwe" is to be conquered via minnesong, a knight has to take a heart in a tournament or even in the verse novella Herzmäre by Konrad von Würzburg a woman unwittingly eats the heart of her lover, which her jealous husband puts in front of her. Admittedly, it got a bit macabre at the end, but that's what the Middle Ages are all about. Just as in the literature of the Middle Ages, your heart should be at the centre in our shop, but not as literally as in the Heart Mermaid. We have merely set ourselves the goal of delighting your heart with various medieval products.
What is LARP?
The so-called LARP (Live Action Roleplay) builds on a large, real-life medieval role-playing game. The participants play character games or amateur theatre and bring historical characters to life, some of them of their own devising. Each individual slips into a role, which is played not only with make-up and clothing, but also with period gestures and speech. An integral part of LARPs is the appropriate setting. For this, the role-players build old stalls, ruins and settings on a site to make the scenery as realistic as possible. The various roles include characters from beggar to castle lord.
You can get support in embodying your role as realistically as possible in the LARP Shop from EMP. Here you can find your individual costume and choose matching accessories - so you can breathe life into your role. While browsing through our medieval shop, you'll find dresses, corsets, bags and decorations. This offers you countless possibilities to give your outfit a very personal touch. You want to show the world your love for the Middle Ages beyond LARP? No problem! We have the right medieval-style items in our online shop - whether you're at work, at a Schandmaul concert, the Mèra Luna or in the middle of the wild hustle and bustle of the Medieval Fantasy Spectacle. How does a LARP work and how does it take place? All the info in the medieval shop from EMP
As with any game, fixed rules also apply to LARPs. These may vary depending on the role-playing game, but there are some basic guidelines. We explain to you how the preparations for a LARP work and what you need to be prepared for - you can find all the information, explanations and suitable reenactment supplies in the Middle Ages Shop from EMP.
1. the unpleasant bureaucracy
LARPs are all unique in their own way, but certain rules repeat themselves and are the same for every role-play. Every LARP begins with check-in and a welcome from the game leader. This first informs each participant about the participation costs. In addition, it is clarified what skills the character possesses and what skills he or she can use. A safety assessment of the weapons on site is also part of the preparations. The question of where the player would like to stay overnight and other organisational matters are also clarified right at the beginning of the role-play.
2. Finding your way in the role
Once you have left the entrance area, slip into the role of the character - it's Stay in your Role (as in method acting). Make sure that things and objects from today's time (such as watches, smartphones, sneakers) are not constantly on display. The aim is to perfectly capture the atmosphere of that time. Depending on how long the LARP lasts, this can be a real challenge. For most, however, this is precisely the greatest fun; after all, everyone is in the same boat. A perfect opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones. At a LARP, you perform exciting plays with like-minded people or simply live everyday medieval life.
3. The exciting hustle and bustle
There are, however, real battle simulations - the highlight for every role-player. In this setting, you need armour, weapons and stamina; after all, such a battle is not fought in ten minutes. But don't worry: Only blunt weapons or latex weapons are used in close combat. These visually resemble real weapons, but are harmless if used correctly.
4. Safety first
To ensure that no one is injured in the fights, there are - as already mentioned - fixed rules. Prohibited are hitting:
- ● on the head
- ● in the face
- ● against the neck
- ● into the backs of the knees .
- ● in the soft parts
- ● with great force (generally)
Melee combat with fists is also forbidden in many LARPs. So that you can protect yourself from the weapons, thick linings or even armour are recommended. Many organisers allow real armour, but also self-made unique pieces in medieval style are welcome. If you break these rules, you run the risk of being excluded from the festival.
Roleplaying with ranged weapons and magic - the special LARP
When one thinks of the Middle Ages, Arthurian legend, the Song of the Nibelungs and the Canterbury Tales are not far away. All these literary traditions have one thing in common: magic. That's why there are also LARPs with magical elements and long-distance weapons like crossbows and bows. These shoot the deadly cargo just like in real life - only not quite as martial. The difference is that the weapons are securely padded and shaped to prevent arrows and bolts from entering the eye socket. Furthermore, they may only have a certain amount of traction. With these criteria, organisers ensure that people cannot injure themselves during the fight. You can find these weapons in many different versions in a professional LARP shop. Such medieval shops specialise in role-playing games and the associated battles.
