by Marcel Anders (03/03) The fourth album of the NuMetal pioneers - again produced by Terry Date aiding the band with an incomparable sound. What used to be called "Lovers" turns out to be an original mixture of heavy riffs and spherical soundscapes. The bordering walk between old-school-noise in Killing Joke- or Prong-vein, paired with gloomy electronica and - and that's new - stadium-compatible songs, like "Minerva". But Chino Moreno wouldn't be one of the most engaged rock-vocalists if he wouldn't use the whole range of his possibilities - from ecstatic, wild screaming to whining stammering, he leaves out no extreme and no facet. The same can be said about the lyrics dealing with relations, love and sex and dragging the listener into an undertow of emotions and feelings. Yes, "Deftones" is an album that asks for your complete attention. It grabs you, turns you upside down and spits you out after 11 songs. Or as Chino put it: "The whole heartache makes me feel alive." Never was a kick into the soft parts so good as this one.
