"Dark Quarterer" LP by Dark Quarterer
Article description
The saga of Italy's DARK QUARTERER is one of the most unique of all time. DARK QUARTERER is truly a cult band among cult bands and was originally formed under a different name in 1974. Back then, they mainly played cover versions of progressive rock, hard rock, and early Heavy Metal before changing their name in 1980 and writing their own songs. It wasn't until 1985 that the band recorded a demo which included songs that would become their long-awaited debut album. Ultimately, this self-titled album 'Dark Quarterer' was released in 1987, proving that DARK QUARTERER were indeed a band ahead of their time: very few sounded anything remotely close to it back then, and its authentically rustic aura was undeniably 'retrograde' for the times.
However, it is these reasons β and many more β that have made DARK QUARTERER's debut album a truly special gem. By finding a unique wavelength where the prog structures of the '70s were revitalized by rumbling, bubbling proto-metal, the Italians created absolute epics here that were equally mesmerizing and challenging, offering a wide range of dynamics and moods that made each of the six original album songs a special world in itself. To say that the power trio 'could play' would be an understatement; it would be more accurate to say that they had the courage to explore new perspectives of imagination while remaining noticeably raw and human. In fact, DARK QUARTERER showed a rough edge that made their epic metal style (before 'epic metal' was even a thing, without them knowing it) incredibly otherworldly and, in a word, MAGICAL. The recognition is equally deserved by the singer/bassist Gianni Nepi, whose theatrical pipes sounded like the work of a witchcraft-tied sorcerer trapped on a misty mountain. Anyone brave enough to venture into 'Dark Quarterer' was definitely in for a great adventure.
