'Last autumn, I noticed that my friends and I were going through a variety of changes in life. The heat of summer was followed by a season of upheaval - some things settled and solidified, while others escalated or imploded,' says Ed Sheeran.
'When I myself went through a difficult time at the beginning of last year, writing songs helped me understand my feelings and process what had happened. So, when I learned about the different situations my friends were going through, I wrote songs again - some from their perspective, others from mine - to capture how they and I saw the world at that time. High points like new love or new friendships were included, but also low points like heartbreak, depression, loneliness, and feeling lost.
My father and brother told me about a composer named Elgar who composed the 'Enigma Variations,' where each of the 14 compositions was about a different person from his circle of friends. That inspired me for this album. When I recorded 'Subtract' with Aaron Dessner, we immediately clicked. We practically wrote non-stop or recorded, and the album emerged from this partnership. I think he beautifully captured the feeling of autumn in the sound. Hopefully, you will love it as much as I do.'
