by Markus Eck (19.02.2010) The feat to create a genuine piece of art like this new exceptional album "After" is only achieved by the sages and philosophers of the Metal genre. It is a well-known fact that Ihsahn is a valued member in the aforementioned group - the master composed and elaborated the basic song components on eight-string guitars. The result: extremely entertaining avantgarde progressive Dark Metal. The famous Emperor front man is competently supported by drummer Asgeir Mickelson and bassist Lars K. Norberg (both: Spiral Architect). But the intense atmosphere of this exciting album is considerably influenced by saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby (otherwise playing in the Black Metal outfit Shining). His instrumental performance accentuates certain parts of the songs, but can also be seen as a kind of extra cream on the cake. There are some playful similarities to the new Opeth stuff, and the overall atmosphere is intoxicating. Brilliant.
