They were with us in Westerland, showed us how to walk as an Egyptian and explained to us why life with a 3-day beard is simply better. Of course, we are talking about the doctors, who have been stirring up the music scene for decades, especially with their cheeky lyrics. But how did it all begin?
The best things in life happen by chance. So it's no wonder that the members of the "Best Band in the World" also met by chance: on March 4, 1981, in the discotheque "Ballhaus Spandau", Bela and Farin collided during a wild party night - literally. While Pogen, the two ran into each other and fell so violently that Farin still has painful memories of the experience today. The unlikely duo quickly discovered that they not only shared the same sense of humor, but were also on the same wavelength when it came to music.
Bela had already started his musical career at this time and played in the punk band "Soilent Grün", which Farin joined a short time later. A year later, in 1982, the band announced its dissolution, so Farin, Bela and drummer Sahni founded "Die Ärzte" in the same year. There are various theories surrounding the name of the band. In an interview, Farin emphasizes that the three punk rockers missed not finding records in the store under the initial letter "Ä" and therefore decided on the name. There were supposedly also caustic chicks and asses to choose from, but luckily the choice fell on "Die Ärzte".
Censorship, provocation and lots of fun
The trio didn't hesitate for long and released the mini LP "Zu schön um wahr zu sein" in April 1983. Funny good-mood lyrics and memorable melodies of songs such as "Teenager Liebe" and "Anneliese Schmidt" made the doctors famous faster than they could have dreamed of.
The first small scandal was not long in coming: In 1984, the band released their first LP with the title "Uns geht's prima".
On the cover was a red cross with a white background, much to the displeasure of the German Red Cross. A court order finally prohibited the band from using the symbol.
However, the incident did not harm the doctors, quite the opposite: a real doctors' hype broke out, followed by the first Germany tour.
The doctors also caused a stir with their first studio album "Debil". The record was only allowed to be sold to adults and was indexed immediately after its release. The censorship was mainly justified by the song "Claudia hat nen Schäferhund", which provocatively pokes fun at the topic of sodomy.
Some record stores even removed the doctors completely from their range. Their fourth studio album "Die Ärzte" was also put on the index because of the controversial song "Geschwisterliebe". So for a while, Die Ärzte were probably the "most censored band in the world".
Separation and new beginning
Despite great success, the band broke up in 1988, and it was not until 1993 that Die Ärzte returned with new band member Rodrigo González. With lots of ideas and fast riffs, Die Ärzte really took off. One hit followed the other: be it the 1995 album "Planet Punk", the single "A Pig Called Men" or the fact that Farin, Bela and Rod were allowed to play as opening act on the Kiss Reunion Tour.
The album "Jazz ist anders" was even awarded 2 times platinum. The solo careers of Farin Urlaub and Bela B are also worth listening to. In 2002, Farin Urlaub founded the Farin Urlaub Racing Team and thus went in the fast lane musically. Bela B proved with his compositions that he can do more than just cut a good figure on the drums.
